I recently went with Orange for internet based on cost. The problem is that I have been used to an N speed router (belkin one) and have a wireless network drive I use for backing up etc.. On slower wireless this takes an age.
I have 2 options:
1 - buy a USB backup drive and use that instead (not my preferred)
2 - find a way of using the belkin router. I know I can do this on its own but will lose my second line (although Orange just told me that if the third party router has a second line it can be used with Orange). Is there any way of keeping the livebox connected but then connecting the belkin one to it to provide the wireless network. In fact, does it even need to be connected to the livebox, I guess I can use it as a plain router, but will then not be able to access the disk remotely.
I am far from an expert on this, but I believe you can connect the Belkin router to the livebox, and use that if you disable the wireless on the livebox, and disable the DCHP on the Belkin router.
You keep the second line, the livebox assigns IP addresses, and the Belkin delivers wireless.
White - you kindly gave advice for me on this matter and I'm going to try and set it up but have a few questions:
It is not clear to me exactly how to disable the wireless on the livebox 1.1 - I have looked i the advanced setup and can't see how to do this.
2 - after that, do I simply run an ethernet cable from a LAN port onthe livebox to the ADSL socket in the belin router? Are there any specifics other than disabling DCHP that could bite me?
3 - if I want to be able to access my network drive from the internet - will it have to be connected directly to the livebox or can I connect it to the faster router and still divert all external traffic to that ip address?
I believe you have the answer to the wi-fi. To connect the two, it is a question of daisy chaining. Connect 1 network cable from the Livebox to one of the network ports on the Belkin (not the ADSL port).
I'm not sure about the NAS - (I did say I wasn't an expert!), you will have to experiment I'm afraid, unless someone who knows about these things comes along...
